CHA-AM, THAILAND

In March 2012 I was a guest kite flyer at the 11th Thailand International Festival held in the Cha-am district of Phetchaburi province.

The event was organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, whose staff were constantly working hard to ensure our visit ran efficiently.

Over 100 international kite flyers participated in the festival held at the Rama VI Camp, Sirindhorn International Environment Park, 10km south of Cha-am. Although plenty of large modern kites dominated the airborne displays there were many interesting examples of the traditional Wau from Thailand and Malaysia.

This was a hugely colourful festival with excellent ground based displays. Thailand also presents a fantastic stimulus to the senses - traditional Thai dancing evoking ancient myths at the opening ceremony; the diverse sights and smells of local markets and street food vendors; the rich cultural and historical sites in Bangkok; high temperatures and humidity; and of course the legendary land of smiles.
