KITE GALLERY
SHADOW
2005
was a year of travel to New York City, Mallorca, Paris and Jerusalem. The exhibition
of Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto at the Louvre provided the first
inspiration for the form of this kite. There was a simple elegance in his designs,
with much use of black.
Later in the year my visit to Jerusalem revealed a rich source of sights and
sounds. The lively souk, the exquisitely decorated Dome of the Rock and the
carved letters in the Valley of the Communities at Yad Vashem.
On reflection there were so many ideas for kites I had drawn in my sketchbooks.
Down the centre of this kite I created a composition based on fragments of
letterforms I had photographed during my visit to Jerusalem.
The kite stands 3 metres high. Construction materials are carbon fibre and
ripstop nylon.
