In 1908 Ludwig Wittgenstein flew kites on the hills above Glossop while studying aeronautical engineering at the University of Manchester.

Students from the Faculty of Art and Design at Manchester Metropolitan University celebrated the inspirational presence of Wittgenstein by constructing their own 'flying machines'.

In the summer of 2012 I worked with students, introducing them to basic aerodynamics and kite construction methods. They then made kites using a wide range of materials, including paper, tyvek, bamboo and even empty beer cans!

2 days later 70 students were taken to Chunal, a hill 2 miles from Glossop, where Wittgenstein had originally flown his kites. Here they were able to test their own constructed kites in the 40mph winds.
